The uprisings of Idris ibn Abdallah in the Maghreb al-Aqsa and Hasan ibn Zayd in Tabaristan, despite sharing the common goal of fighting oppression and establishing Shiite governments, were shaped under different social and political conditions. The research question of this study is to examine the underlying factors, goals, methods, and outcomes of these two uprisings and to analyze their similarities and differences. This study aims to shed light on the impact of socio-political contexts on the strategies and achievements of these two movements.
The data for this research were collected using library methods, and the analysis was conducted through a comparative and analytical approach. The findings reveal that Idris ibn Abdallah, by garnering the support of Berber tribes and undermining the Abbasid Caliphate, established the first Shiite state in North Africa. In contrast, Hasan ibn Zayd, through the invitation of the people, the support of migrating Sayyids, and alliances with local rulers, was able to eliminate Abbasid influence in Tabaristan. Although these two uprisings shared overarching goals, they employed different methods, and while their states were short-lived, they paved the way for the emergence of more powerful Shiite governments in the future.
