Ashura is among the few historical events that have long held a prominent position in Shiʿi literature and have played a role in the ebb and flow of historical developments. This significance has led to the recording of Ashura-related narratives in various historical periods of Shiʿism according to contemporary needs, resulting in diverse perspectives—historical, theological, hadith-based, emotional, mystical, spiritual, heroic, and mythological—within this branch of Shiʿi historiography. Therefore, understanding political-intellectual spaces is a tool for understanding attitudes, and the study of attitudes in Ashura news is a factor for analyzing layers of political-intellectual history of different periods. During the Safavid era, Ashura narratives were predominantly written with an emotional focus, reflecting social needs such as liberation from the pressures of centuries-long non-Shiʿi rule, influencing subsequent periods. Shah Tahmasp understood the void of Ashura poems for the recitation of the holy graves, and considering his knowledge of Mohtasham Kashani's poems, he asked him to compose Ashura poems. This study, by posing the question of how Mohtasham’s Ashura poetry articulates perspective and employing qualitative content analysis, examines the historical origins of his viewpoint. The findings indicate that most of Mohtasham’s poetry expressed an emotional–sentimental perspective aligned with the intellectual and political conditions of his time, connecting it to a narrative of trial and predestination concerning the events of Ashura.
