Napoleon’s campaigns established new relations between Iran and France, and the field of “Iranology” expanded with the publications of French travelers who visited Iran after the French Revolution. The descriptions of Iranian society in these travelogues differed from prior conceptions of Iranian culture and civilization, providing valuable sources for contemporary history and Iranology. These accounts addressed topics such as social hierarchy, living conditions, and the status of women with a precision rarely found in other sources.
This study aims to revisit certain aspects of Iranian society in the works of selected French Iranologists and writers of the Qajar period, employing a descriptive–analytical approach and a documentary method. The study investigates which aspects of Iranian social life and relations attracted the attention of French authors. It hypothesizes that the social life of Iranians, due to its apparent disparities with European societies, drew the greatest interest of these travelers. The findings indicate that French Iranology adopted a detailed-oriented approach, and some of the more erudite authors were able to identify and describe the hidden layers of society—such as women’s status and social hierarchies—providing highly precise historical-sociological information.
