Abstract
The Muhājir Companions, who were among the earliest believers in the Prophet Muḥammad and played a fundamental role in the formation of the early Islamic community, supported the Imamate of Imam ʿAlī, Imam al-Ḥasan, and Imam al-Ḥusayn after the Prophet's demise for various doctrinal, political, and ethical reasons. This study examines the different patterns of the Muhājir Companions’ support for the Ahl al-Bayt during the period of the first three Imams, the factors underlying these forms of support, and the approaches adopted by the Imams (A.S.) toward each group.
Within this framework, doctrinal–ethical, political–social, and economic–personal factors are treated as the independent variables, while the patterns of the Companions’ support and the responses of the Imams constitute the dependent variables. Employing a historical-analytical approach and drawing upon authoritative historical and ḥadīth sources, the study demonstrates that the support of the Muhājir Companions can be classified into three categories: doctrinal–ethical, political–social, and economic–personal. In response to each category, the Imams adopted distinct strategies, including strengthening religious understanding, praising loyal supporters, providing material and social assistance, and reforming or criticizing those whose commitment proved weak or inconsistent.
The findings indicate that support rooted in profound doctrinal conviction constituted the most enduring and stable form of allegiance, whereas motivations based primarily on political or economic considerations frequently resulted in instability or deviation. The study further concludes that the prudent and discerning responses of the Ahl al-Bayt (A.S.) played a pivotal role in consolidating the institution of the Imamate and fostering the enduring social identity of the Shiʿi community.
