The struggle for independence from foreign domination has historically been a reaction observed in every nation. The Arab entry into Iranian territory, given the religious aspect of this event, was perceived by the general populace as a hope for liberation from the politically and socially chaotic conditions of Sasanian Iran. This hope initially led to a passive reaction, particularly among the lower classes, toward the Arabs. However, the bearers of Islam, especially during the Umayyad period, soon prompted the people to respond through their political and social conduct. The active participation of the mawālī in the Abbasid movement failed to achieve their aspirations; consequently, efforts emerged, often under a syncretic religious guise and with Mazdakist overtones, to counter Arab domination, all of which ultimately ended in failure. Tahir, the progenitor of the Tahirid dynasty, by employing a deliberate policy of political–religious compromise with al-Ma’mun and, in effect, with the Arabs, not only undermined the inviolable spiritual authority of the Abbasid caliphs—during the golden age of the Abbasid Caliphate—but also, by religiously justifying his actions, gained control over Khorasan in exchange for his services. Moreover, his people-oriented political conduct ensured the continuation of power within his family even after his death. This paper assumes that Tahir’s application of Islamic realism was the principal factor in the rise of the Tahirids and Iran’s relative independence. Relying on primary sources and employing a descriptive–analytical method, the study highlights both the difficulties faced by Iranians in achieving independence and the various manifestations of Tahir’s Islamic realist policy in his words and actions.
